DFU prevention takes a step forward with PelliTec

Treatment of diabetic foot ulcers becomes much more difficult over time, with a poor prognosis after they reoccur. The treatment cost for recurring DFUs is estimated at $9,000 per patient, so effective DFU prevention pays for itself and improves patients’ quality of life.

DFUs are the most common foot complication in people with diabetes. Research shows that the recurrence of DFUs within one year after healing is 40%. Recurrance rises to 65% after five years.

The key to successful foot-ulcer prevention is effective pressure offloading and the reduction of shear stresses such as friction. This is currently achieved using passive devices such as insoles. These aim to minimise downward pressure, but fail to adequately reduce friction stresses.

PelliTec pads are different

PelliTec pads have have been designed and patented in the United Kingdom to cushion and reduce friction in the DFU area. The pad sticks to the inside of footwear, not to the skin. It has a cushioning top layer, and a gel interior which moves with the foot.

And unlike products that stick to the skin and need to be replaced every day or two, PelliTec pads can remain effective in footwear for several weeks and are easily replaced by a new pad when necessary.

The result is DFU prevention that delivers greater comfort, greater convenience, and greater confidence.

PelliTec pads are easy to use

Simply remove the adhesive backing, place the pad in the desired location in clean, dry footwear, and press firmly into place. Our video shows how simple this is.

PelliTec pads are proven

“The study was successful in showing that PelliTec technology can be safely and effectively used in patients with high-risk diabetic foot ulceration.”

Dr Dinesh Selvarajah,
Consultant Diabetologist

PelliTec pads have been trialled in a multi-disciplinary podiatry clinic in a large hospital in the United Kingdom.

High-risk people with diabetes – who all had healed DFUs – were given the pads to use over a 12-week period. There were no incidences of new or recurrent DFUs during study follow-up.

Over 80% of patients said the pads were comfortable and stayed in place in their footwear. The results of the study have been presented at several conferences including DFCon23, the conference organised by the American Limb Preservation Society.
